Nervous About Auditions?

By Brittany Randolph, Artistic Director

August 2026 – 4-minute read

Every audition, we hear the same thing: “I really want to audition… but I’m terrified.”

If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re in good company. Whether it’s your very first audition or your fiftieth, those butterflies never completely disappear. The good news? They don’t have to.

At Maricopa Community Theatre, we believe auditions aren’t about proving you’re perfect; they’re about giving yourself the chance to tell a story. Everyone in the room, from first-time performers to seasoned veterans, started somewhere. So I wanted to share a little insight from my perspective in hopes of helping you shake off those nerves!

Were you ever nervous before an audition?

Yes, and I still get nervous to this day! I remember my very first musical audition, back in my junior year of High School. I had just moved to a new city/school, never sung in front of people before, and I was getting over a cold. I sang the song “Something” by The Beatles from the film Across the Universe a cappella. My voice was hoarse, I messed up the lyrics, and I wanted to crawl into a hole. I was cast in the ensemble and was just so happy to be a part of something.

Now, I use those nerves and that memory and channel it into my audition prep. Nerves aren’t bad, you just need to learn the best way to use them to your advantage!

How do you harness your nerves?

I really love to research the show. I dive into the show’s history, the character descriptions, the setting. I use all of that to help me choose a song or monologue that captures the same vibe as the character I’m interested in. The more I start picturing myself as that character, the more those nerves transform into a subtle confidence. That way, even if I don’t get the role I was hoping for, I just think “It wasn’t my time” or “I wasn’t this director’s vision.” It doesn’t mean I had a bad audition, just that what I presented didn’t match what that director wanted.

What do directors actually want to see?

In the room, I like to see commitment to a choice. Make a decision on character, vocal quality, and/or movement. This translates to a willingness to get silly and play around. We also like to see actors (new and veteran) interacting with one another. This helps soften nerves and helps everyone feel a little more comfortable.

What’s one thing people worry about that really doesn’t matter?

I think a lot of people probably worry about not hitting the right note or missing a word. Most of the time we won’t notice unless you tell us, with an apology or body language. If a hiccup like that happens, try not to give it away. Keep telling the story!

What’s something that does make someone stand out, in a good way?

I enjoy seeing the song/monologue that the actors choose. I like the mindset of coming in and going full out for the role you want. Pick a song that matches the vocal qualities AND personality of the role you are going for, maybe even add subtle nods to the character through your outfit. This shows dedication and preparedness. You did your research and now I understand how YOU would play that role.

What advice would you give someone walking into their very first audition?

Take a deep breath and have fun! If you go into that room just looking to have a good time, we all will feel that same energy and everyone will leave smiling! The best auditions often happen when someone lets themselves enjoy the moment.

What makes MCT auditions different?

We genuinely want you to succeed. Everyone in that room, from the directors to the volunteers checking people in, remembers what it felt like to audition for the first time. Theatre is about connection, not competition. We build families with every production, and we want every person who walks through our doors to feel welcomed, encouraged, and valued.

If someone reads this article and is still nervous…what do you hope they do?

I hope that they reach out to me personally, or anyone on our board, and ask any and all questions they have. Shoot us a message on our socials! We are here to help in any way we can. We’d much rather answer your questions before auditions than have you stay home because you were nervous.
